Phase 1, Scoping & Ecological Appraisal
The first step in understanding the ecological value of a site is an initial ecological appraisal, or scoping study. This allows us to advise on the possible presence of protected species from an early stage, which can help in the timing and programming of planning applications and proposals to reduce expensive delays.
A standard Scoping Assessment comprises a desk study, site survey and summary report. The desk study uses resources including aerial photography, online mapping and ecological record resources and consultation with local Environmental Records Centres to gain an understanding of the ecological context for a defined area surrounding the study site.
The site walkover would always as a minimum comprise an extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey and Protected Species Assessment. This would identify the habitats present and the likelihood of protected species occurring on a site, allowing us to advise whether any further specialist surveys would need to be made. If the survey shows the site is of low ecological value, no further surveys may be required.
